Ejemplo 1

El siguiente ejemplo presenta un archivo XML que contiene un catálogo de libros. El documento está encabezado por una declaración XML (línea 1), a la que sigue el elemento raíz <catalog>, que tiene su etiqueta de cierre correspondiente al final. Cada libro (elemento <book>) viene con un atributo de identificación (id) y anida distintos nodos descendientes con los datos más relevantes de cada uno de los ejemplares (autor, título, género, precio, fecha de publicación y descripción). En este segundo ejemplo se enumeran y describen las partes de un ordenador. El documento XML incluye una Document Type Definition (DTD) llamada "parts.dtd" (segunda línea) y una hoja de estilo CSS que determina la presentación final del documento a través de las instrucciones de procesamiento incluidas en el archivo "xmlpartsstyle.css" (tercera línea).
